                                                  1839-1914

Began his career as a teacher, and after service in the Civil War, in which he rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel, was appointed deputy surveyor of customs at Boston in 1866.  
Commencing his telephone career as auditor of the American Bell Telephone Co. in 1883, he later became associated with the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co.
Serving as president for 25 years, and was also a director of the 
American telephone & Telegraph Co. for more that 30 years.
